Artist’s Statement :
My art-making journey has been largely self-taught. In the midst of (what some might call) unstructured meandering, I first encountered what I imagine is an issue for most artists coming from idiosyncratic cultures – reconciling ones roots with the contemporary global culture that is largely dominated by western aesthetics. This is particularly evident in India, where notions of tradition and modernity have been in a constant tussle for years.  The crux of this struggle is being able to hold my own in the art world without being dubbed “exotic”. I only really began exploring traditional Indian art after I’d absorbed the western narrative of art history. Thus, the schism that exists between the two was all too evident to me. My paintings are an effort to weave these loose threads that into something coherent and beautiful. They are an attempt to imbue images with a historical narrative, while remaining deeply personal.
